In the United States, she toured California and a large format U.S. edition was published. In Tokyo, the Japanese edition was honored with the Sankei Shimnun Literary Prize and its translator given an award, the book was seen as a plea for peace. The peace theme was again emphasized the following year when the Gekidan Fuji theatrical company created a musical ot it with a cast of 200.

In the mid 1980's Shizuye and Della Burford worked together on a Peace Project that took the art of Nicholas Roerich to prisoners at the Toronto Detention Centre.
Della and Shizuye then did art and writing with woman prisoners. They were locked in a glass enclosure with the women prisoners. Most forgot their problems for
a short while as they got lost in their creative expression.
